USA Schools receives grant from Michigan Farm Bureau for after-school food

The Unionville-Sebewaing Area School District recently received a $2,500 Feeding the Future Grant, according to a recent release.

The money will be used to provide snacks to students if they are still in school after they have been put out for tutoring or other events.

Students will not receive cash of any kind, but the money will be like pots that students use to buy food. This helps families with limited income and allows students to focus their energy on after-school activities.

US Student Services Coordinator Laura Polega said:
The United States is one of 16 organizations in the state to receive a Feeding the Future Grant this month. Grants are provided by the Michigan Agents Charity Fund’s Farm Department Insurance. Organizations were nominated by local agriculture department insurance agents and selected by a panel of ACF donors based on the needs of the organization, the population served, and the overall goals of the program to which funds are directed . In 2022, $178,000 has been awarded through this grant program. The next round of grants will begin on January 1, 2023 and will award up to $4,000 in grants.
Michigan Department of Agriculture agent Deborah Crosweck and Unionville’s Amber Goodchild were among those who nominated the United States for the grant, hoping to foster awareness and advocacy around food insecurity.

“Preparing healthy, nutritious meals and snacks is beneficial to children’s health by providing them with the food they need to meet their hunger and nutritional needs,” said Goodchild.
With a mission to end hunger in Michigan, ACF is a donor-designated fund operated through the Michigan Agriculture Foundation. Through grant programs such as Feeding the Future, Farm Bureau agents, clients and partners provide food and education programs to starving Michigan residents and support her more than 3,000 hunger relief agencies statewide.
